Updated: Feb 4

My computer used to be packed with bookmarks—quick links to articles, resources, and solutions I’d gathered over the years. I took pride in being resourceful, knowing I could always return to those links when I needed them. It felt like part of my identity.

Beliefs work the same way.

They’re mental shortcuts—built from things our parents said, something we learned in school, a conversation with a friend, or even a random ad that stuck. Over time, these beliefs shape how we make decisions, handle relationships, and navigate the world.

But what happens when those old bookmarks—those mental shortcuts—stop working?

The Error 404 of Widowhood

At seven years old, you might have believed families always take care of each other. At twenty, that belief may have evolved—but did it? Too often, we don’t update our internal system until something forces us to.

And grief? Grief is the ultimate system crash.

You built your marriage, your family, and your life around a belief system that made sense when your partner was alive. But now? Now, those same beliefs leave you feeling lost.

The conversations you used to enjoy at work seem trivial. The things that once made sense—how to parent, how to socialize, how to plan for the future—feel out of place. You click on an old mental shortcut, expecting it to guide you, and instead, you get an error message.

It’s disorienting. It’s exhausting. And it’s isolating.

Updating the System

Grief forces you to rebuild, to create new mental bookmarks for this version of your life. And let’s be honest—it’s messy. It’s frustrating. It makes you doubt yourself.

But here’s the thing—it’s not a system failure. It’s just a page error.

You don’t have to figure it out alone. Sometimes, you just need a fresh perspective or a little professional help to update those bookmarks and build new ones that serve you now.

If this feels like where you are right now, you’re not broken—you’re just in the middle of an update.

This is exactly the work I do with widows, and it usually only takes 2-3 coaching sessions to create a real shift.
